About Me

Collage All_Oct Tet 2 Cropped

I've made non-traditional paper aircraft since 1970, winning distance, duration, aerobatics and design contests. I placed in the 2nd Great International Contest in 1985, and set a 164'4" Guinness Distance Record March 28, 1985 (Guinness Book - Hardback British Edition). I needed a bigger building to retake the record with a new design (which flew 218' in practice). The rules changed, I got married and moved on to other things. I've developed many new designs, construction methods, and aircraft types, including the World's first published forward gliding paper autogyro (unpowered helicopter) with blades spinning on paper axles.

Timeline

1970 My first good flying constructed airplanes.

1972 My first Flapper (Bat)

1976 First good swing-wing design (X-14). (Pictured in local newspaper in 1978.)

1976 Invented a way to make lightweight high performance fighters that turn tight, do aerobatics and fly far.

1976 All-moving tailplane on paper axle (Scale F-16)

Approx 1977 Estes rocket powered paper airplanes.

1978 Swing-wings with extendable trailing edges for flaps or delta wings (X-22)

1979 Variable geometry wings with 3 moving lift sections and enclosed variable CG system (X-28).

1977-1985 Developed many new designs and won numerous distance, aerobatics and original design prizes at the annual Wichita State University AIAA Paper Airplane Contest.

1982 Retractable Rolling Landing Gear (X-28mk-3)

Early 1980s Scaled up high performance paper airplane into an RC model. Flight control technology was not good enough.

1985 First Aircraft designs that could glide more than one direction (still secret) & multi-mode aircraft research.

1985 World Distance Record

1985 Placed in the 2nd Great International Contest.

1985 First known published forward gliding paper autogyro with blades spinning on paper axles, (2nd Great International Paper Airplane Contest, 1985.)

1986 New (still secret), much better distance design flew 218'. Needed bigger building for new record.

1987 Tried to develop kits, held a workshop, considered publishing.

1987 Met my wife. Took time off from paper aviation.

1990s Refined my 1980s "Flying Page" for steady gliding.

1990s New method to make lighter and more realistic scale models (F-15)

1995 McDonald Douglas Paper Airplane Contest (2 Duration prizes).

2000s Refined Non-Origami designs. (Flat paper, no folds, layering, tape or glue allowed. Can cut, and/or use paper clips.. Learned how to glide one without any ballast.

2000s Flapping bird with beak and tail. Other new flapping craft.

2000s Developed Folded Kirigami (cut & fold) to construct airplanes without tape or glue.

2007 Cut & Folded single piece , aerobatic Kirigami F-14 with working swing wings.

Late 2000s Participated in, then organized Cessna Food Drive Contests with real flying aircraft.

2010s Multi-mode aircraft and advanced aerobatics.

2011 Flying Paper Ball

2014 H-7mk-4 "Rube Goldberg" flier

2015 Sidewinders (Fly like an airplane till stall, then go sideways as a tumbling wing)

2015-16 Websites (You Tube, Facebook, RealPaperFlight.com)
